New EQ Preceptors Announced:As posted by our Holy Grand Master Athelstan, he is resigning as preceptor of Everquest and has named Sir Gamanin and Sir Mordoss as Co-Preceptors in his place. Though the HGM is stepping down as preceptor he intends to remain an active part in EQ and guild affairs albeit not as much. We wish you well Lord Athelstan, both in the plains of Norrath and where ever else your path may lead you.
-- Sir Kyna, Herald of the Cross
Regarding EQ policy:Out of Knights Council:
This is a recap of our policies regarding the initiation of new members as well as giving aid (twinking or power lvling), clarified hopefully to avoid further misunderstanding.
1) Uninitiated people should only be added to guildchat for short periods of time, like hunts, then removed immediately after the events, or to a maximum of one week. This should be used very sparringly, and those added should remain ANON in guildchat; 2) All interested people should be directed to the webpage and Marco's link to the EQ FAQ. They should then be asked pointed questions about why they want to join. If they are found to be acceptable, the Knight (or Squire if so designated by a Knight) should then /guildinvite the new member, and the Knight must then administer the ceremony *and tell the Guild Herald!*. It is then the personal responsibilty of the Squire or Knight to mentor the new initiate. If the person is lacking, then talk to Athelstan and we will decide to /guildremove him/her; 3) We are currently suspending the practice of active recruiting such as "shouting" in zones for recruitment. Instead, we should group with the potential members, or from people who actively seek us knowing who we are;
4) Twinking and powerlevel policy: New members should be made well aware that they will be helped, but only through the higher levels asking them, NOT the other way around. We encourage helping the newer members in every way possible..But they should NOT expect it. That goes for taxi rides as well.
(As a side note, this has been our policy in the past and it underwent no major revisions last night)
Note from the Herald: Only members who have been intiated by ceremony by a knight will be added to the roster. If any further clarification is needed, please ask.
In Service-- Sir Lady Kyna, Herald of the Cross
Lots of News From Guildwide: Meeting was hopping last night with a record 24 members in attendance. Wonderful to see all your shining faces. Things started off in EQ with an announcement of a guild hunt this Sat at noon CST in permafrost. A motion was also made to include guild activities that lower level members can participate, and House Valentino offered to host an event soon. Please keep an eye on the message boards for more news on that. We also had some spirited discussion on the matter of recruitment in Norrath. There is a thread going on that matter on the boards, though I request that people stay sensitive to the matter at hand. Also the Everquest new member FAQ is now posted in the New Members section. Not required reading but helpful for those looking for more info.In UO news the guild stone has once again changed hands and this time no warp, so we'll need to put people back on the stone again. You can either ICQ me at 803264 to get online or have someone sponsor you on the stone and I'll add you as soon as I can. Preceptor Elbryan noted that fight night attendance has been low, but dedicated. He is conducting training to ready themselves to try the newly discovered dungeon.
We also had quite a night of ceremonies. We witnessed Kittenpaws, Puppypaws, and Sumakin elevations to adepts, the couple taking sponsorship under the house An Tuath, and Sumakin joining house Heimdall. Then Malkavian and Sir Mordos took the oath of squire and knight. Also swearing their bond of knight and squire was Sir Elbryan and Ryu. Both moving speeches. May you all grow in wisdom and spirit together. To finally top it all off was the much awaited knighting of Sir Aeramon. Glad to add another esteemed brother to the Order of Chivalry.
Knight Council Meeting: Just a reminder, Knight Council is this Sunday at 10pm CT. Please try and make it if you can.In service to the Cross -- Sir Kyna, Webmistress
EQ FAQ: An Everquest FAQ for perspective Defenders has been proposed by Sir Marco Valentino. You can find a copy of it here, and as soon as its official I'll be posting it over in the new members section.
Guildwide Meeting: Reminder, guild meeting this Thursday 9pm Central time, guild chatroom. We'll be taking care of the UO guildstone afterwords so mark your calenders! In humble service -- Sir Kyna, Herald of the Cross
Late Night Update: Reguarding the recent time warp last night. The the changeover of the stone did not take place. When Sir Daedin returns from her vacation we will make a second attempt. I'll update you as information reguarding the matter comes in.
UO Stone Update: As first act as Herald of the Cross, the position so graciously bestowed upon me by Sir Daedin (we'll miss you) and the Knight's Council, I need to ask eveyone to come by the HCD stone and redeclare your fealty. At 8:45 pm CST Tuesday I will be at the tower so hopefully by the time fight night starts we can get everyone back on the stone. If you want to get back on the stone before tomorrow night, just ICQ me at 806432 and I'll try and pop on quickly and get you set. I hope to make this transition as smooth as possible and it would be great if eveyone could make it Tuesday night. Besides its fight night and we wouldn't want to miss that! I'm sure Preceptor Elbyran has something great in store for us. See you then!In humble service -- Sir Kyna, Herald of the Cross
EverQuest Roster Updates! I received notice tonight of the Initiation of four fine people on EverQuest. Our warmest welcome to Nealaien, Ladiena, Nikkita and Saloin! Also, Baron Sir Marco informed me that Baken has become an Adept under the sponsorship of House Valentino. Congratulations, Baken and Marco! Please take a look at the EQ roster and make sure your listing there is correct!News from Knight's Council: My news from Council is both happy and sad. On the happy side, I am delighted to announce that Kyna has graciously decided to take over as our new Web Mistress and the Guild Herald!! Thanks to Kyna for taking over these positions! I'm sure that you will show her all the support you have given me over the years. The side note to this is that I am taking my leave of Ultima Online, a decision that I announced to my brothers and sister in council. Having lost my best reasons to play, I intend instead to set about deciphering parts of this huge pile of ancient documents concerning our past history. I hope to post them as I transcribe them, so look for news of that. Its been a long strange trip indeed, but I thank you all for the support you have shown me in the past. My special thanks to Lord Athelstan for tolerating the Secretary from Hell :)
EdGuArDo has resigned his brief tenure as Preceptor on Ultima, and that position has been dutifully taken over by Sir Elbryan. He is a man who has done the job and done it well in the past, so I'm sure he will continue his fine service. Lets give Elbryan our full support! EdGuArDo also reported that he will be leaving UO at least for the present. I'm sure his presence will be missed.
As part of her new duties as Herald of the Cross, Kyna has taken over the main Guildstone on UO. Unfortunately, that means that most of you on UO will have to get with her or Elbryan to get re-added. I believe they are hoping to arrange a general meeting on UO to do this. Look for more word of that here or on the message board.
Speaking of the message board, Athelstan and Mordos are planning some dungeon crawls on EQ, so keep a sharp eye to the board for word of that, as they will be coming up soon.
And so with this final missive as your Herald and WebChick, I bid you farewell, but certainly not goodbye. Thanks for all the good times! Yours, Aye - Daedin (just plain Daedin)
Early Morning News! Lord Marco posted an announcement to the message board that I'd like to repeat here! From Lord Marco:Yesterday at 8pm Central time (Sept 6, 2000), the first wedding of two HCD took place on EQ. Kittenpaws and Puppypaws were joined in the bonds of holy matrimony and given their booster shots. There wasn't a dry eye in the zone when, in the presence of many HCD and friends witnessed the happy couple. The Groom licked everyone in thanks for their attendance, and the pair went off on their honeymoon with no fears of having a hose turned on them. If you took pictures of the ceremony, please send a copy to Daedin so that we can all see it on the website!
In service to the Cross,
Baron Marco Valentino*Mordos has sent me some pics which I'll get posted later today into the Gallery! - Daedin*

We'll be meeting in IRC then at the new time of 10pm Central (8 Pacific). I'll send out another reminder as we get closer!Daedin - Herald of the Cross (WebChick)
Another Addition on EverQuest! Word has come to me that another fine Initiate has been entered onto the roles on EQ. Hail and welcome to Initiate Haggai! The roster has been updated!UO Elevations! Last night's ceremonies on UO saw the elevation of Sagan and Zhu Chao as Squire to Sir Elbryan, and the Initiation of Cairhienin into our ranks! Thank you to those of you who made time to attend the ceremony, and congratulations to Elby, Sagan and Zhu, and Cairhienin!
An Astounding Find! Yesterday, workers at the site of the Defenders Waystation made yet another remarkable discovery. A short ways from the building site, they stumbled upon the entrance to what appears to be a vault that was part of the original complex associated with the Guild Library. What they found there may well be a revelation. Stacks of books and masses of ancient scrolls and other texts have been unearthed, and many are in reasonable states of preservation. I believe that it may take some time to translate and document the contents of these works, but I'm very excited to think that we may now have access to much more of our esteemed history. To those of you who have expressed a desire to help preserve and bring to light our history, I ask that you contact me so we can coordinate efforts in this area.

Squire Aeramon's Vigil Announced! Hear the words of Lord Athelstan:The vigil for Aeramon (his first step to entering the chivalry) has been scheduled for 10pm CST this Monday (8/21/00). We had a nice turnout for Mordos' vigil a while back, so let's keep up the attendance!
Yours in service to the Cross, Lord Athelstan
I'll assume this is to be held in our IRC chat room, but if I get info to the contrary, I'll post it. Congratulations Aeramon and thank you Your Grace!
More Guild History Unearthed! Workers at the building site of the Defender's Waystation have once again come upon some ancient writings concerning the early history of the Guild. In honor of the new history that has come to light, Sir Mordos has taken the name of "Dauzat" as his Guild Patron Name. A brief history of Dauzat Brithwen, one of the earliest Defenders of the Holy Cross, has been transcribed into the Guild History. Lets hope that even more of our ancient history will come to light soon!

Recap from tonight's Guild Wide Meeting: Thanks very much to everyone who made time to attend tonight's meeting! Here is a brief recounting of some of the things from tonight:Everquest: Lord Athelstan reported that the Veeshan Alliance hunts are going well, and are being held regularly on Saturdays at Noon Central. This saturday, however, His Grace has called for a Guild hunt on Saturday at Noon Central to Cazic Thule. Please make your plans to attend and contact His Grace for more information. In regards to the Veeshan Alliance, here is a list of the other allies: The Order of the Wyrm, the Brotherhood of Balance, the Lost Order of Alkalabeth, The Sons of Steel, and our own branch of the HCD--the Teutonic Knights. The link is set up to the Veeshan Alliance message board in the links section of our site here.
Ultima Online: Sir EdGuArDo reported that fight nights continue, but the attendance has been low lately. Sir Elbryan is running the Monday hunt, Sir Ed is running Thursdays.
Ceremonies!! We kicked off the ceremonies for the evening by elevating Xanthalus to Adept of An Tuath a'Mhonadh. Congratulations and welcome, Xanthalus!! Our next bit of ceremony was the entrance of Squire Kazola into the prestigious Order of the Perciplex! Lord Athelstan has these words to say about her entrance:
(To Kazola) "You have reached the ultimate level in your wielding of mighty forces in defense of the Cross, and as such you will be recognized. Therefore upon you today shall we bestow the Order of the Perciplex, and may the enemies of the Cross behold you in terror!"
We capped off a lovely evening with our highlight ceremony, the long awaited elevation of Mordos to the Order of Chivalry! As his Knight and long time friend, Lord Athelstan had these words to say:
"I have been your Knight and your friend for a long time, Mordos. Your service to the Guild has been second to none, as shown by the honor of the Order of Sir Eshmiel bestowed on you. I would even have given you a second Order in recent times with the frequent taxi services you have been asked to perform, and gladly at that. If anyone truly has persevered long as a member of the HCD and grown in its service it is you, Mordos. I am proud to have served as both your Knight and Lord, and am gladdened by your joining the Chivalry of the Defenders."
With this wonderful event, we adjourned the meeting amidst much celebration and good cheer. Thanks again to everyone to made time to attend!
Respectfully submitted - Daedin, Herald of the Cross (WebChick)

Very Early Morning News!! I just got home from the real life wedding of our own Sir Marco Valentino to his lovely bride Gisela (this would be Jeremy and Jenna) and I wanted to post a quick note for everyone. What a beautiful wedding, a smashing reception and a knees-up party at their house afterward. The weather was perfect (rare enough for the Pacific Northwest), and our view of Puget Sound and Mount Rainier from the reception hall was amazing. Our Guild has been most outstandingly represented by Lord Granyte, Sir Elbryan, Sir Gamanin and myself for the festivities, which will be continuing later today before we all finally must part company. Its been such an excellent visit, full of joy and friendship, beautiful memories, funny stories, and all those wacky things that happen whenever us Defenders meet up in real life. In particular, we've had a great time introducing our gaming friends to our SCA friends...both who have heard much about each other. I continue to be struck by the warmth and friendship we all share. What a wonderful opportunity for us to gather! I hope the rest of you will join with me in wishing all the best for the happy couple, and lets hope they hit it big in Vegas on their honeymoon! I'll try to post up some portraits if I can get my hands on some so you can share in today's events. For Marco and Gisela....Huzzah!!!

EverQuest Screen Shots: Squire Amonrahz sent me two excellent portraits from the Teutonic Knight's recent excursion into Kaesora. The first one is a lovely group shot, the second shows an odd looking character known as the "Tortured Librarian". And you thought being a librarian was a nice quiet job! Anyway...you can find these great shots in the Gallery. Enjoy! Thanks Amonrahz!Daedin - Herald of the Cross (WebChick)
Mordos' Vigil a resounding success! Many thanks to all of you who made time this morning to attend Mordos' vigil as a Knight Candidate. The session was an excellent round of both questions and answers by the Candidate and the people who attended. Well done, Mordos, and good luck and good hunting to all of you who are attending the excursion in Norrath with the Veeshan Alliance.Ancient text recovered! During the excavation of the foundation of the Defender's Waystation, workers came across sections of an ancient Guild text which contain an account of the historic Founder of the Order of the Holy Cross Defenders. The text has been transcribed into the Guild History and we continue to work to recover such documents.

Initiate Ng Claims Barrier Island for HCD: I received this portrait from Initiate Ng this afternoon. Apparently, he has claimed the barrier island of Trinsic (Trammel facet) for the Holy Cross Defenders :) You'll also find the picture added to the Gallery. Enjoy!Daedin - Herald of the Cross (WebChick)
New Member Initiated! Tonight saw the long-awaited assimilation...err...I mean Initiation of our dear friend Redlowwinski into the ranks of the Ultima Defenders! Thanks to the many people who made time to attend, and especially to Redlow, who has been a long time considering this choice. Congratulations, Redlowwinski and welcome at long last! The UO roster and Gallery pages have been updated! *And may I further note that we had a lovely time hanging with everyone in the Guild hottub afterwards! Read below for more on that!*News from Great Lakes! I'm delighted to announce a bit of house shuffling that we've done in our area on the Felucca facet, having now replaced both the training hut and the small smithy with a lovely tavern-style building! After we placed, we found room between the "Ale House" and the Tower for Squire Wei to place a mini tower. He's done a great job with the "HCD Port Authority and Lighthouse", and the basic decor in the Ale House is complete. I hope you'll stop by soon and see the changes we've made! Many thanks to Sagan, Ed and Elbryan especially for their financial support!
The Holy Hottub? It seems the recent hottub/pool rage across Britannia has finally struck the Defenders of the Holy Cross. Our newest Initiate Ng brought this highly amusing decor to the Dorm yesterday by creating a large pool/hottub/baptismal in the upper room. Stop by and take a relaxing dip in the holy waters...ponder the meaning of the Holy Cross as you languish in the pool...bring your friends! Many thanks Ng for this addition!

Mordos' Vigil is Announced! Take heed to words of our Holy Grand Master!Pray please attend!
On this Saturday (8/5/00) at 11am CST, my squire Mordos will hold his vigil, the first step to knighthood. We will hold it in the HCD-IRC chat room. Everyone is welcome to attend this question/answer ceremony. Learn what it is to become a Knight!
Yours in service to The Cross,
Lord Athelstan
New Initiate is made! This morning (in a small but lovely ceremony), Ng joined the ranks as an Initiate Defender. I hope those of you who haven't met him will get a chance very soon! He's been added to the UO roster and the gallery. Lets welcome our newest recruit! Vivat!Early Morning News from Knight's Council: Athelstan reported an excellent turnout at the EQ hunt last weekend, and extended his thanks to everyone who attended. After some discussion, a tentative plan to invade Kegde was discussed. Watch the message board for details on that. Also, a link to the Veeshan Alliance message board has been included in the Links section for your convenience, so you can keep up on all the latest! Keep up the good work in finding and recruiting good people for the Teutonic Knights!
On Ultima, Daedin expressed her wish to turn over her office as Preceptress. She suggested Sir Edguardo as a very suitable and capable replacement, and he has accepted the position. Well done, Ed! As Guild Herald, Daedin is retaining possession of the main guildstone, since she is present at most ceremonies (heralding her little fingers off!). We thought this would be most convenient, as we won't have to fool around with getting people on the main stone after a switch.
**On a personal note, I hope that all of you on UO will give Ed the same affectionate support that I've received. It's been a pleasure to serve you as Preceptress, and I hope the feeling has been mutual. I know he'll do a wonderful job and I'm glad to be able to turn the office over to such a capable person.**
We've also decided to move the time for Knight's Council up to 10pm Central on those Sundays that we hold it. The next Knight's Council is August 20th (date changed), the next Guild Wide meeting is Thursday the 17th of August at 9pm Central.
Respectfully submitted, Daedin, Herald of the Cross (WebChick)
Knight's Council is Tomorrow! Sunday, July 30, Midnight Central in our IRC chat room. Hope to see you lovely Knights there!Daedin, Herald of the Cross (WebChick)
News from the Guild Wide Meeting: Thanks to everyone who made the meeting tonight! Here's a recap of what we discussed:Everquest News: The Veeshan Alliance is holding a hunt to the Plane of Fear for those lvl 29+ on Saturday the 22nd at 11am Central time. If enough people do not make the hunt, we may alternately hit the Temple of Druga. Contact Lord Aethelstan for details or check the Veeshan Alliance message board at the Order of the Wyrm homesite.
Ultima News: We have revised the Guild hunt night schedule to include a hunt Monday nights at 9pm Central, as well as our hunts on Thursday nights at 9pm Central. Muster at the Dorm for both nights. Contact Sir Elbryan about the Monday hunts, and Sir Ed about the Thursday hunts. We have collected runes to most everyone's houses on Trammel, as well as to some other interesting spots. Sir Kyna said she has town and dungeon runes at her place, and Osherl has some runes as well in her cabin. Sagan has donated a bunch of house add-ons which will be in Trammel for anyone who needs them. Ryu (Trinsic Minister of Defense) said Trinsic is sponsoring hunts on Wednesday nights to help the town coffers. Also, donations of ingots or scrap metal weapons or cash would be gratefully accepted. Sir Elbryan (Treasurer for UO HCD) said he is also happy to accept donations to go to guild projects and worthy charities.
Other News: If you are a member and haven't gotten listed on the roster, please contact Athelstan or Daedin and they'll get you listed. This is particularly pertinent to the Everquest folks as Daedin is pretty in the dark about members there.
Upcoming meetings: Next Knight's council is July 30th, Midnight Central, IRC. The next knight's council falls on August 13th, same time and place. The next Guildwide meeting is August 17th at 9pm Central, IRC, then the last knight's council of August is the 27th, Midnight Central, IRC.
Elevations!! As the meeting closed down, we bore witness to the elevation of Selini to Adept of House Heimdall on Everquest. Congratulations Selini!! We then witnessed the long-awaited Initiation of our good friend Krista! We are also holding an in-game initiation for Krista tomorrow at 7pm Central at the Tower, GL Felucca. If you need a ride, meet at the Dorm about 20 minutes before then. Welcome and congratulations, Krista! The roster has been updated with the changes.

Guild Wide Meeting Tomorrow! The Guild will hold its monthly meeting tomorrow at 9pm Central in IRC (uo.netc.com #HCD). It should be a fairly short meeting, so I hope many of you can make time to attend!News from the UO Meeting: Thanks to the members who were able to attend last night! We talked about several things, and here are the highlights from our discussion:
Runes to everyone's places on Trammel are being collected and put into one of the rune books in the vendor/rune station (Osherl's log cabin). If you'd like to open a vendor, let Daedin know and she'll arrange that with Osherl. Osherl is also collecting runes of interest, so if you have copies of runes to interesting places like other vendors, player run places and dungeons, etc, we'll put them in books for everyone's use. The Red Dragon Inn (Gilgad's villa) is coming along nicely, we expect this will be our mustering spot in Trammel (Elby said he liked the 'cafe' atmosphere there..heh). If you have any interesting items laying around that we can use to decorate there, contact Daedin.
We are accepting an invitation to war and roleplay with the Disciples of Mondain (DM), the Knights of Brittania (KoB), the Lords of Vengenance (Vng), the Rebels of Britannia (R/B), and the Crimson Imperial Guard (CiG). If you are interested in participating, you should start by visiting the DM home page and reviewing the Rules of Engagement under the menu selection "Community". Its important that we all understand the rules so this can be a fun thing for everyone. Next, we've reactivated the war stone, which now lives in the Dorm's mess hall. Ed is in charge of the stone, so contact him and he'll get you on. We are having a practice session tonight at 9pm Central at the Dorm to test out the war stone, which would be an excellent time for you to get on the stone.
Guild Hunt Nights have been revised a bit. We'll be holding a Monday night hunt under Sir Elbryan, muster at the Dorm at 9pm Central, and Thursday night hunts will continue to be under Sir Ed also at 9pm Central at the Dorm. If you have ideas on other activities, let me know.
Ryu, Minister of Finance for Trinsic (woo!), told us that Trinsic is sponsoring a Wednesday night hunt for all its supporters (of which we are one), with half the proceeds going to the treasury, the rest being split between participants. Contact him for details.

End of Housing Madness! UO members meeting announcement! After last night's Stage 3 placement of houses (small ones) on Great Lakes, we can now only hope that the madness of House Placement is behind us. Now, its time to get back to work!! First off, I'd like all of you that have placed any buildings on Trammel to get a rune marked and labelled for your house. We'll collect all these and lock them down where everyone can get to them. Right now, we have *some* runes in Osherl's log cabin, just north of our corresponding area in Felucca, but we'll get everyone's places in a book. Also, feel free to mark a rune to Osherl's as a sort of "base camp" in Trammel for now. Next, we need to get together and catalogue what people need for decorations and such for their houses (Daedin 2 is in Trammel now, a bit low on logs, but she can make most add-ons and all furnishings, especially if you have materials). We also need to have a pow-wow to discuss what uses we'll be putting our buildings to and all that, and we need to talk about the schedule for guild nights. Also, we should talk about the upcoming faction thing. To celebrate the end of the madness, we'll meet in our IRC Chat room July 18th at 9pm Central. As you adventure around Trammel, please keep your eyes open for Felucca moonstones. We need em BAD. Thanks to everyone who's been so patient, and congratulations to our new home owners!
Knight's Council Tomorrow! Late notice on Knight's Council! We'll be meeting in our IRC Chat room at Midnight Central Sunday, July 16th. See you there!

Early Morning Update: For all of you who celebrated American Independence Day this week past, I hope the holiday was fun and safe! As you can see, I'm back from my trip and back on the job. Some news came to me upon my return..sorry for the late notice. I received a copy of a message concerning Sir Edguardo's upcoming struggle against the forces of Evil in his position as Dragon Knight representing Krista's Ranger Station. Herein is the message I received:Hail brothers and sisters:
I was meditating in the Temple, and I had a Vision. I did see the Gold Light, and to see anything is a Gift from the Gold One, for I'm blind. I did hear these words and was told to pass them onto you.
"Saimanius, well hear me and take heed. Prepare the Dragon Knights and others, for I fear the Battle of the My mother The Gold One versus The Black Beast will take place when the Northern Moon touches the Three Sisters stars. This means it will occur on Monday beginning at 9PM EST... have all followers of Virtue and the Dragon Knights meet at the Temple of Virtues in Dragon's Bay.. Thank thee - Garnett"
May Virtue be with us all.
Saimanius Elder Apothecary, Temple of Virtue (OGD)**OGD is the Order of the Golden Dragon. This is "The Gold One" that Saimanius speaks of. She stands as a symbol of their beliefs in the forces of Good, much as the Most Holy Cross stands as our symbol**
I'm hoping we can get a contingent together in support of Ed. If nothing else, I thought we could at least cheer him on to his inevitable victory over this newest dark threat, but you never know what will happen, so come prepared for battle. Note that the time given was Eastern time, that will be 8pm Central time, 6pm Pacific. I expect we'll gather up at least a half hour before then at the Dorm. I'll make sure there is a rune to Dragon's Bay there in the top rune book.
